imageFishing charters are available around the world and the etiquette and behaviour that is expected is usually about the same. For many people going out on the open sea may be a new experience and it could be part of a bucks party celebration or just a few mates looking to do something different. Here on the Gold Coast, we accept that some people may not know what is and isn't the acceptable behaviour whilst out at sea so we have put together a little guide to assist you.

1. Be polite

Your captain will be taking care of you and your party for your day's fishing so it is always a good idea to get off on the right note. Ask their permission before boarding, after all, you wouldn't just walk into someone's house would you? Show respect and you will have a far better all-round experience and this is what everyone wants.

2. No bananas!

Whilst the first point should have been obvious but nonetheless very important, no bananas on a boat may be something you haven't heard of. Whilst not all captains will subscribe to this, superstitions say that they bring bad luck so again to keep on your captain's good side, it is probably best to leave them on dry land.

3. Don't be shy to say what you are looking to get out of the experience

Captains have a lot of skills but mind reading isn't one of them. To make to experience far better tell him or her what you are looking to gain from your day. You may be looking to catch a particular species of fish such as tuna or you may want to eat certain food onboard. If you don't communicate this, how will the captain know?

4. There are no guarantees that you will catch anything

Remember that no matter how skilled your captain is or how experienced you are as a fisherman there is no guarantee that you will catch anything. The purpose of a fishing charter is to enjoy the entire day and you should view any catch as a bonus and not the objective. Whilst your captain will do all that they can to try and help you catch fish such as taking you to their usual water's, sometimes you just have to accept that they are not interested in taking a bite.

5. Don't throw rubbish overboard

Another of the rules that you shouldn't need to be told but one that is worth mentioning, all the same, is do NOT under any circumstances, throw rubbish overboard. Not only is this just plain bad manners, it will infuriate the captain who relies on those waters to make a living and it will also contribute to further pollute our oceans. Simply, DON'T do it!

6. Give a tip!

Your captain will have worked hard to make your day as enjoyable as possible to show your appreciation by filling up the tip jar. It is only a small token of thanks but one that will definitely be appreciated.
