Flow control valve (FCV) is the name given to the type of valve which allows controlled flow of gas from an appliance or vent to prevent backflow of gas or liquid from an appliance or vent. In a conventional vent system, a vent lets in air from outside while supplying gas to an appliance. The vent is provided with an external clock spring to keep the gas or liquid coming up to the appropriate pressure for the appliance. Normally the pressure of gas or liquid coming up from the vents is sufficient to force back the flue gases inside the vent or appliance, hence resulting in backflow of gas or liquid.

Commonly used flow control valve types are three-way ball valves, which provide a three-way control of flow. Also commonly used are two-handle or one-handle mini valve types, which operate on either a single or dual control. The two-handle mini ball valves are preferred because they offer a good degree of control. The one-handle variety is most often used for plumbing pipe reducers, however, there are also some mini ball valves which are suitable for use with ventless systems.


The one-handled ball valves, when powered on, spin to open and close the actuator. On the other hand, the two-handle ball valves do not spin. The design is similar to the one-handled variety, except it does not require a separate handle. It can operate on either a single or dual actuator. Two-handle mini ball valves require a two-pronged adapter, such as an SMA connector and an electric circuit breaker, in order to function properly. Although these types of ball valves are usually cheaper, they are not very reliable and are not very useful for applications requiring high precision control.


Common materials used for two-handle ball valves are brass, copper, and nickel. Brass and copper are considering the best insulators, but nickel is slightly more desirable for its corrosion resistance. All ball valves have a one-inch ball size, which is the standard size for most plumbing pipe applications.


Flow control is very important in closed loop systems. In such systems where the only purpose of the system is to prevent the flow of sewage fumes, then it is imperative that the closed loop condition is maintained at all times. The increased restriction in the flow of gas or water through the pipes will prevent both from becoming contaminated with organic solids or rust forming. In some cases, where the purpose of the system is to regulate the discharge of solids into a drainage field, the presence of a reduced bore may allow regulated flow of liquid waste gases.
