There are about 100 breeds of cats that can be classified into 5 categories:
- Persians and Exotics
- Wavy or curly hair.
- Long and semi-long hair.
- Short hair
- Oriental and Siamese
These 5 categories are the result of the analysis of the common characteristics of cats, as well as their origin existing cat breeds.
People have intentionally made alterations in the genetics of some cats in order to obtain new breeds. It should be said that new breeds have also been born from the natural crossing of cats of different breeds.
Persians and exotics
Persian cats are considered luxury cats, for their magnificent coat and for their attitude and behavior.
Exotic cats share almost all the characteristics of their closest relatives, with only one difference, the length of their hair. Exotics have considerably shorter hair.
Wavy or curly hair
Cats in this category are the result of mutations in the structure of their fur.
There are advantages for living with cats of this breed since the hair does not shed. We are going to mention two cats in this category, although there are many more. The Selkirk rex breed because it reminds us of a sheep. And the LaPerm breed for its spectacular curly hair.
Long or semi-long hair
This category of cats are highly demanded and praised for their spectacular beauty, with their sublime fur, they usually seem larger than they really are. Despite their most notable drawback, hair loss and the need to brush them daily, they are the ones that have the best acceptance among cat lovers.
We highlight the breed Aphrodite's giant or Aphrodite Cyprus because it is considered to be the oldest breed of domestic cats on the planet. And also the Ragdoll breed (ragdoll), which receives this name for their relaxed attitude and their thin and small muscles.
Short hair
This is the most numerous and diverse category. Its coat does not require our attention, they alone take care of it perfectly. We highlight the Bengali cat for its wild appearance (we already talked about this breed in another article ).
And we also mention the Russian Blue breed, considered the most aristocratic breed.
Orientals and Siamese twins
The Oriental breed cat is characterized by strong musculature and a slim structure.
Elegant and agile but with fine bones. Siamese cats are distinguished by the color of their eyes, always blue, and by their unmarked fur. The oriental cat breed is considered the original, while the Siamese could be a natural mutation of it.
