A missing teenager who drowned off the coast of a popular Sydney beach has been remembered by his loved ones as an outdoors enthusiast - as his mother shared a heartbreaking post to social media. 

Ivan Korolev, 18, went for a swim with two friends at Freshwater Beach around 8pm on Saturday night.

His two friends called police when they lost sight of him and he failed to return to shore around 8:15pm  

Emergency services launched an extensive search and rescue operation, working through the night to try and find Ivan. 

After initially failing to locate him, the search began again early Sunday.

HIs body was tragically discovered in the water around 9:15am.

Friends and family have posted tributes to the adventurous young man on social media.

Ivan's heartbroken mother, Anna Zolotukhina, shared an emotional post that read: 'My son, my son.'

She told  that her son was 'one of the strongest and the nicest person I've ever known' and that he 'had a lot of friends'.

She spoke about her son's love of the outdoors, saying he exercised 'everyday', enjoyed parkour and had been practising martial arts 'from the age of five'.

Ivan also wrote on Facebook that he was a 'lover of all things outdoors'.

He was due to start a sports and fitness degree at the Australian Catholic University in a matter of weeks.

Local police, the Marine Area Command, Surf Life Saving NSW, Marine Rescue, Polair and the Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter scoured the area from North Curl Curl headland along the coastline to Bluefish Point and further out to sea to find Ivan.

Marine officers patrolled the water, while police scoured the beach on Saturday night.

The search operation continued in the morning when Ivan's body was found.

Police say his death is not being treated as suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
