Be careful with ushers. They are trained to intervene when needed. If they kick your sneakers out, then leave the theatre. They might also check your ID at entry. If they discover that you are not 18 years old, you'll be ordered to go out.
A note from a parent or legal guardian must accompany you if younger than 21. If you are being accompanied by a child who is under the age of 11, you must also be accompanied by an adult who is 21 or over.
Films that have an "X" rating no longer make sense
The name X is misleading to indicate the movie rating. It is not an official trademark of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) or Classification and Ratings Administration (CCRA). There is no reason an X rating should be assigned to a film other than to make money.
The X rating was not used to assign film ratings to films targeted towards older audiences, but it was used to label films with violent content. The X rating isn't the only film rating with misleading names, however. A lot of theaters will not show X-rated movies and this reduces their chances of box office. Newspapers cannot show ads for movies that are X-rated. Television stations cannot air restricted versions. This is a poor business choice, and has resulted in a recent campaign to reform the system.
The movie rating industry has grown. The X rating was replaced with the NC-17 rating which is the next best thing to the X rating. The strengths and weaknesses of the NC-17 rating are similar to the weaknesses of the X rating. One of them is that the NC-17 is an advertising trick.
