Cultural Appropriation and Donkeys

The domestic donkey (Equus Africanus asinus) is a hoof-mammal belonging to the family Equidae. Originally from Africa the domestic donkey comes from the African wild ass. Depending on the species domestic donkeys can be classified either as a subspecies or a distinct species.

Arse vs. ass

"Arse" is a British Slang term for girlfriends a'stupid person but is it an abbreviation for 'ass'? This is where there is confusion, since both are based upon horses as a species of animal. "Ass" is the correct word for Girlfriends donkey in the USA.

Arse was originally a non-offensive term that refers to a body part. However, it has since become an offensive term. In the 19th century'ass is an alternative to arse. It was originally a term used to describe horses that resembled horses. However, it was transformed into a slang term for an arse in the 1860s. It is also used in the expression "to arse around'. "To create an ass of oneself" also makes use of the word "ass" which is closely related to "to arse around". However there are many meanings that stem from arse that do not appear in the word 'ass'.

Appropriateness in popular culture

We often witness instances in which an dominant culture is able to adopt elements from a minority's culture. This practice, also known as cultural appropriation, can cause resentment from members of minority groups. Whether it is wearing an Native American headdress at a music festival or wearing blackface on Halloween, many Black people feel that this is an act of patronizing.

A dominant group may also adopt elements of minority cultures. However, they may also make use of intellectual property belonging to the minority group. Blackfishing is a prime instance. It is important to keep in mind that people with the color of their skin have a history of being marginalized and deprived of rights. Consider, for instance, the history of people of color being marginalized when you see someone wearing costumes in blackface for Halloween.
